"Stagnation" or even regressions: five years to the day after the Paris climate agreement, several left-wing officials on Saturday accused Emmanuel Macron of presenting a poor record in this area.

"What has this government been doing for three years since it has been in power? Nothing," accused the boss of the Communist Party Fabien Roussel, on France Inter.

"This president is the one who developed the Macron coaches when it was necessary to develop the train and the freight", he cited as an example, judging that "it is not because we repaint the facade in green that behind there is a policy in favor of the climate ".

The EELV mayor of Grenoble Eric Piolle also considered that "France is standing still" while "there is energy in society" in favor of the ecological transition.

"It takes a click for France to be up to it," he added on TF1.

On the side of LFI, Adrien Quatennens lamented on Twitter that "with Macron, France does not respect the commitments of the COP21".

"A decree of April 2020 revises downwards the targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. More than a third of the @Conv_Citoyenne's proposals are revoked or modified," added the rebellious deputy, with reference to the future project of law resulting from the Citizen's Convention for the climate.

Mr. Macron is due to speak on Saturday at a virtual summit for the fifth anniversary of the Paris agreements, co-organized by the UN, France and Great Britain.

This agreement resulting from the COP21 on the climate "constituted a strong advance of multilateralism", he declared Friday, at the close of the zero carbon Forum of the cities organized by the town hall of Paris.

"We can be proud of this agreement," added the head of state.

The 27 EU countries agreed on Friday to further reduce their greenhouse gas emissions over the next ten years.

This commitment is, however, considered insufficient by environmental NGOs to meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
