Hochfilzen (dpa) - The German biathlon women ran 0.2 seconds past a podium in the second relay race of the winter.

Behind world champions Norway, France and Sweden, the German quartet with Maren Hammerschmidt (31), Franziska Preuß (26), Janina Hettich (24) and last runner Denise Herrmann (31) came fourth at the World Cup in Hochfilzen.

The women's relay was 32.7 seconds behind the Norwegians - after a total of nine spares and one penalty loop by Franziska Preuss.

Nevertheless, the German team managed to make amends for the bankruptcy a year ago at the World Cup in Tyrol.

Twelve months ago, the DSV women ran in twelfth place and had the worst relay result for a German team ever.

At the season opener a week ago in Kontiolathi, Finland, the team finished third.
