Moscow (AP) - A Russian nuclear submarine has tested four ICBMs in the Sea of Okhotsk on the Pacific.

As the Ministry of Defense announced in Moscow on Saturday, they hit targets at a firing range in northwest Russia more than 5500 kilometers away.

The test came amid open negotiations on the future of the last major nuclear disarmament treaty between Russia and the US.

The New Start Treaty limits the nuclear arsenals of both countries to 800 carrier systems each and 1,550 operational nuclear warheads each.

It expires at the beginning of February next year.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said the test was the conclusion of large-scale exercises by the nuclear forces.

He informed Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin about it.

The rockets were fired from the submarine "Vladimir Monomakh".

According to observers, Russia also wants to show military strength with tests and maneuvers.
