12 December 2020Moments of fear yesterday afternoon in New York, when a car hit some demonstrators in Manhattan who were participating in a protest organized by the Black Lives Matter movement.

At least six injured were rushed to hospital, although none of them would be life threatening.

The driver, a 52-year-old woman, was arrested and questioned along with her 29-year-old daughter who was with her in the car.

The fear of the authorities was immediately that of premeditated racially motivated action.

But the men from the New York Police Department explained how the investigation went on and at the moment it is unclear what caused the episode.

Witnesses recount how a black BMW was blocked at an intersection by protesters peacefully protesting in the middle of the street in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Midtown Manhattan's East Side.

The woman driving would then tell that she was surrounded and that someone would start hitting her car.

At that point he would have suddenly pressed the accelerator and overwhelmed the people who were in front and passers-by who were crossing the street.

The consequences of the gesture, the rescuers explained, could have been much more serious and heavy.

Scenes of chaos and panic followed, with people screaming and running away, some for fear of an attack.

Eventually the car's run, with the windshield smashed by one of the people running over, ended a block ahead with the arrival of the police.

Investigators will now determine whether or not there are racial reasons behind the accident.

The fact is that in New York episodes of the genre are multiplying.

In July an SUV swooped down on a march of the Black Lives Matter movement in Manhattan, while in September a car swept away some demonstrators in Times Square.
