Planica (dpa) - The spectacular World Cup coup in Seefeld was less than two years ago, when the German ski jumping duo Karl Geiger and Markus Eisenbichler could win several medals again.

At the Ski Flying World Championships in Planica, Slovenia, Geiger was first and Eisenbichler third at halftime in an excellent starting position.

“I'm extremely happy when I can get involved with Halvor Egner Granerud and Markus and annoy them,” said Geiger after two strong flights at 241 and 223.5 meters.

He wanted to “only annoy the top duo at first, but if I can do good jumps, they have to be able to keep up”.

This is exactly what it will depend on on Saturday (4 p.m. / ZDF and Eurosport).

On the huge flight facility in the Slovenian idyll, 15 to 20 meters are quickly away, as the distances of almost four meters (Geiger before Granerud) and almost five meters (Geiger before Eisenbichler) appear minimal after two of a total of four passes.

“It's brutally tight.

We are actually starting from scratch again, ”stated the Allgäu violinist, whose heavily pregnant wife is expecting their first child back home.

In front of empty ranks and in the dead of winter, the secret favorite Geiger and top candidate Eisenbichler will have to pull the more than seven-second flight as long as possible into the landing slope.

Especially «Eisei», as the 29-year-old Bavarian is called, seems to be on the best way there with his 247-meter flight in the second round on Friday.

“That's why I love ski jumping,” he commented happily.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Seefeld in February 2019, he won the individual on the large hill ahead of Geiger, and the day after they won gold in the team.

This is how it could go this time too, on Sunday (4 p.m.) in Planica, at the end of the competitions, team flying is on the program.

Eisenbichler and Geiger are part of the German team.
