Dortmund (AP) - Borussia Dortmund are threatened with troubled times.

With a disgraceful 1: 5 (1: 1) against VfB Stuttgart, the Revierclub said goodbye to the title race of the Bundesliga.

As with the defeat two weeks ago at the same place against 1. FC Köln (1: 2), BVB offered an indisputable performance despite the interim equalization by Giovanni Reyna (38th minute).

Stuttgart's goalscorers Silla Wamangituka (26./Foulelfmeter/53.), Philipp Förster (60.), Tanguy Coulibaly (63.) and Nicolas Gonzales (90. + 1) sealed the deserved defeat in Dortmund.

With this, the newcomer further improved his considerable away record with six games without defeat.

Like hardly any other team, BVB suffers from the lack of fans.

Because the 1: 4 was the sixth defeat in the eighth home ghost game across all seasons.

The recent setback is likely to complicate the talks planned for January about an extension of the contract with coach Lucien Favre, which expires at the end of the season.

Even the return of the recently ailing defensive players Raphael Guerreiro, Manuel Akanji and Mateu Morey had no positive effect on the game culture.

The Favre team, which has changed to six positions compared to the game at Zenit St. Petersburg, once again remained well below its playing potential.

Instead, the Stuttgart determined what happened and prepared a lot of work for the BVB defense with a lot of movement and fast combination play.

Only the good reaction of goalkeeper Roman Bürki to a remarkable free kick by Borna Sosa prevented an early Stuttgart lead (7th).

Only six minutes later, VfB attacker Tanguy Coulibaly just missed the Dortmund goal.

BVB did not even begin to offer as much speed as the guests.

As in previous games without striker Erling Haaland, the build-up game lacked depth.

That played into the cards for VfB: In a counterattack by the Swabians, Emre Can caused a penalty with a foul on Mateo Klimowicz, which Wamangituka converted.

If Coulibaly and Klimowicz had shown less nerve just a few minutes later with a double chance, BVB would have fallen 2-0 early on.

Only the lavish handling of the guests with the possibilities saved BVB further embarrassment: Klimowicz failed in the 37th minute from a good position at Bürki.

A goal out of nowhere brought the Dortmunders, who had been completely indisposed until then, back into the game.

After a dream pass from Guerreiro to Reyna, the American guest goalkeeper Gregor Kobel didn't stand a chance with a remarkable shot from 14 meters.

That was the only reason why the hosts went into the break with an undeserved 1: 1.

Shortly after the restart, VfB rewarded themselves again for their strong performance.

Orel Mangala took advantage of the reckless passing game by Jude Bellingham and Guerreiro and passed the ball to Wamagituka, who scored the fourth Bundesliga goal for his team in a row with a 2-1.

This 1: 2 was like a knockout blow to Borussia.

Both the goal of Förster and the 4-1 of the strong Coulibaly, the defense hardly made any resistance.

In the three away games in Bremen, at Union Berlin and in the cup at Eintracht Braunschweig, which are due before Christmas, Borussia threatens further trouble.
