Recently, Guangxi National Hospital admitted 7 patients with carbon monoxide poisoning.

It is understood that on the evening of December 9th, Mr. Zhou’s family of four took turns taking a bath, and carbon monoxide poisoning occurred. Fortunately, after being taken to the emergency department of Guangxi National Hospital by 120 ambulance, Mr. Zhou’s family received comprehensive treatment such as medication and hyperbaric oxygen. Out of danger to life.

At noon on December 10, the reporter saw in the hyperbaric oxygen chamber of Guangxi Nationalities Hospital that Mr. Zhou's family was undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the cabin. From the facial expressions, the four people were in good condition.

At about 1 pm, Mr. Zhou, who walked out of the hyperbaric oxygen chamber, had a lingering fear about what happened the night before.

That night, after the two children took a bath, Mr. Zhou continued to wash, and then went to his wife, Ms. Ling, to take a bath for about an hour and a half.

After washing, the wife passed out after returning to the room for half an hour.

He quickly dialed 120. When the ambulance arrived, his wife had been in a coma for half an hour, the two children had vomiting symptoms, and he himself was weak.

Mr. Zhou said that his gas water heater was installed outside the bathroom, and the night before, his wife had a brief coma after taking a shower.

But before the diagnosis, they knew nothing about the harm of carbon monoxide.

The reporter learned from the director of the Hyperbaric Oxygen Department of Guangxi National Hospital, Lu Jun, that in the early morning of the 10th, the hospital admitted a total of 5 patients with carbon monoxide poisoning. In addition to Mr. Zhou’s family of 4, there was also a little girl who was also sent to the hospital early in the morning. The youngest of the five is 3 years old; and two days ago, he also admitted two patients with carbon monoxide poisoning when he was on duty.

According to the treatment plan, these patients need to receive 85 minutes of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for 12 consecutive days, during which they must be hospitalized for observation.

Lu Jun told reporters that these three cases were caused by the improper installation of gas water heaters in rental houses. After carbon monoxide poisoning, it will cause damage to the myocardium and various organs of the body. Cerebral edema will occur after hypoxia, which is serious. From time to time, coma and death may occur.

Lu Jun said that 90% of the carbon monoxide poisoning patients admitted in previous years were caused by improper installation of gas water heaters in rental houses, and 99% were poisoned by carbon monoxide. Few cases were poisoned by gas leaks.

Experts remind everyone that when heating, try not to use coal stoves and charcoal stoves for heating. If you really need to use them, ensure that the room is ventilated.

In addition, the gas water heater should not be installed in the bathroom, and should be equipped with a strong exhaust device, and always check whether the relevant parts are loose, aging, or broken.

When taking a bath, pay attention to open the exhaust fan or window for ventilation.

When multiple people use the water heater continuously to take a bath, a certain time interval should be maintained to ensure the circulation of indoor and outdoor air.

Once you find that your family or neighbors have an adverse reaction, you should call the emergency number while helping yourself and each other.

How to identify carbon monoxide (gas) poisoning?

  1. Mild poisoning.

I feel dizzy, headache, vertigo, and general fatigue. At this time, if you can open the window to ventilate in time and inhale fresh air, the symptoms will quickly alleviate and disappear.

  2. Moderate poisoning.

Excessive sweating, irritability, unsteady walking, pale skin, confusion, feeling awake, drowsiness and fatigue.

  3. Severe poisoning.

Unconsciousness, closed teeth, twitching all over, incontinence of urine and bowel, complexion, lips, lips, breathing and pulse increased.

Extremely critical patients can continue to be in deep coma, weak pulse, irregular breathing, drop in blood pressure, and high fever at 40°C.

How to prevent carbon monoxide (gas) poisoning?

  1. When installing stoves (including soil heating), check whether the stoves are in good condition. If any problems such as damage, corrosion, air leakage, etc. are found, they should be replaced and repaired in time.

  2. When using a coal stove for heating and cooking, a chimney must be installed and kept unobstructed. If the chimney is found to be blocked or leaking, clean or repair it in time.

  3. The chimney that extends outside should also be equipped with wind shields or turning necks to prevent gas from being poured back.

  4. Before going to bed every night, be sure to check whether the fire is sealed, whether the furnace cover is tightly closed, whether the air door is open, and whether the smoke exhaust is unblocked.

  5. Do not use unqualified or overdue gas stoves and gas water heaters, and do not modify gas pipelines without authorization.

  6. Do not use the generator or use the car engine for heating in a poorly ventilated space for a long time.

What should I do if I find a gas poisoned person?

  1. Immediately open doors and windows for ventilation, quickly move the patient to a place with fresh air, and rest in bed. The patient should rest quietly to avoid increasing the heart and lung burden and increasing oxygen consumption after the activity.

  2. Make sure that the patient’s airway is unobstructed, and the head should be tilted to one side for the unconscious to prevent vomit from being inhaled into the airway, causing suffocation.

  3. For those with coma or convulsions, an ice pack can be placed on the head to reduce cerebral edema.

  4. Observe the patient's changes. For mildly poisoned patients, they can recover after several hours of ventilation and observation; for moderately or severely poisoned patients, call 120 emergency number as soon as possible.
