Baden-Württemberg is fighting against the dramatically increasing corona infections with state-wide exit restrictions and a lockdown after Christmas.

Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) announced on Friday that after Christmas the country wanted to shut down social and economic life as much as possible until at least January 10th.

If no uniform nationwide solution can be found, the southwest will seek a joint solution with the neighboring states of Baden-Württemberg - i.e. form a kind of coalition of the willing.

Possibly this weekend the federal and state governments will discuss a common approach again.

How exactly the lockdown in the southwest should look like remained open at first.

"Unfortunately, the situation is alarming," emphasized Kretschmann.

"We have signs of a renewed exponential increase in the number of new infections, so it is imperative that we tighten the measures drastically."

At the beginning of next week, the country wants to shut down public life further.

Among other things, a night curfew and daytime exit restrictions are planned, the German press agency learned after a conversation between the green-black state government and the municipal umbrella organizations on Thursday.

Those who leave the house during the day should only do so with a valid reason, such as for work.

On Thursday it was said that all-day exit restrictions are only planned for regions with more than 300 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in one week.

Every fourth citizen of Baden-Württemberg lives in a hotspot

The number of confirmed corona infections in the southwest had recently increased by 4208 cases within one day to a total of 179 154 infections since the beginning of the pandemic.

Nationwide, the value for new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days was 168.8 and thus again higher than on the previous days.

In Baden-Württemberg, almost every fourth person now lives in corona hotspots with escalating numbers of infections - i.e. regions with more than 200 newly infected people per 100,000 inhabitants within a week.

In several urban and rural districts, stricter measures than the state-wide regulations in the fight against the pandemic apply because this mark is exceeded.
