Berlin (dpa) - A nationwide observation of the entire AfD by the protection of the constitution is moving closer to a «Spiegel» report.

The decision should therefore be made in January, reports the magazine.

At the conference of interior ministers, the President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Thomas Haldenwang, explained that the influence of the actually disbanded völkisch wing in the AfD had increased.

This was also shown recently at the federal party congress in Kalkar, North Rhine-Westphalia, at which the far right camp had almost half of the delegates behind them.

The Office for the Protection of the Constitution had already classified the "wing" around the Thuringian state chief Björn Höcke as "proven extremist" in the spring.

In several East German federal states, the AfD state associations are already being monitored by the offices for the protection of the constitution.

The chairman of the conference of interior ministers, Georg Maier (SPD), said with a view to the AfD that the interior ministers had also spoken about "whether there may be efforts to undermine democracy from within, through parliamentary channels."

The AfD chairman Jörg Meuthen spoke of a "politically desired observation".

He told the German Press Agency: "While bourgeois-conservative forces are recognizable across the board in the AfD, Mr. Haldenwang tells against better knowledge that the influence of the so-called völkischen camp is increasing."

This is clearly wrong and will not be legally tenable.

A classification as a suspected case allows the protection of the constitution to use intelligence resources.

That means, for example, informants from around the party may be hired.
