Düsseldorf (dpa) - At a top-level meeting between the federal government, the federal states and industry representatives, the growing problems of German steel manufacturers will be discussed today (10.00).

Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier, North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister Armin Laschet (both CDU), managers of the German steel companies and IG Metall will take part in the online round, as a spokesman for the Ministry of Economics announced in Düsseldorf.

The round should prepare the steel summit, which has been postponed to next spring due to the corona restrictions.

The German steel industry is fighting on several fronts: dumping prices and overcapacities on the world market are putting it under pressure, as is the collapse in sales due to Corona.

In addition, there is an immensely expensive conversion of the production for climate protection.

With a “steel action plan” adopted in the summer, the federal government promised to support companies in the billions of euros in switching from coal to hydrogen.

The situation is particularly difficult for the largest German steel producer Thyssenkrupp, which posted a loss of almost one billion euros in the past fiscal year.

The long-established group is therefore examining the cooperation with another steel manufacturer and also the sale of the steel division.

The British company Liberty Steel has made an offer to buy and is currently looking closely at Thyssenkrupp Steel's books.
