Paris (AP) - Because of the Covid 19 pandemic, the reopening of the Eiffel Tower has been canceled for the time being.

"Following government announcements, the Eiffel Tower is postponing its reopening until further notice," said the official Twitter account of the famous Parisian landmark on Friday.

The tower, which is more than 130 years old, was supposed to reopen to visitors on December 16.

It has been closed since the end of October when the new exit restrictions in France began.

If you have booked a ticket for the period between December 16 and January 6, you will receive a free refund, according to the operator of the tower.

The French government put the brakes on the corona easing on Thursday.

Museums, cinemas and theaters must now remain closed until January - three weeks longer than promised.

They should have opened again in mid-December.

The reason: France has not achieved the goal set by President Emmanuel Macron of fewer than 5,000 new corona infections per week on a weekly average.
