06 May 2019 The Prosecutor General has asked for the 9-year prison sentence of the former Christian Democrat minister Calogero Mannino, accused of threatening the State Political Body in the appeal process on the so-called State-Mafia negotiation.

Mannino, acquitted at first instance, chose the shortened procedure and is judged separately from the other defendants for whom the appeal process is underway.

Mannino's second degree trial began on 10 May 2017 before the judges of the first section of the Palermo Court of Appeal chaired by Adriana Piras.

Two years of hearings, therefore, with a reopening of the trial in which, among others, the repentant Giovanni Brusca was resented.

The thesis of the Public Prosecutor's Office, which asked for the same penalty invoked in the first instance, is that Mannino, in the "list" of enemies that Cosa Nostra had decided to eliminate to "settle the accounts" with those who had not kept the pacts, started, thanks to his contacts with the officers of the Ros a sort of negotiation with the gangs to save his life.

A reconstruction, however "rejected" by the GUP, who sees in the former powerful politician the "engine" of the dialogue that pieces of the Arma, with political coverages, would have had with the bosses to end the season of the massacres.

A pact that would have had as a price for the institutions impunity for the boss Bernardo Provenzano, a less rigorous line in the fight against the clans and a lightening of the harsh prison for the mafia.

Mannino: "Request for condemnation without foundation"

"The request that the prosecution office has made is devoid of any foundation and evidence. If there is evidence, it is that of a prejudicial and imaginative claim", comments Mannino warmly .

"Even in the same way as the Montalto ruling itself. That the whole negotiation is reduced to the fear of the undersigned and from his inspiration to a general of the carabinieri is only a fake-news, it is a thesis without foundation and consistency, and therefore of proof. the request of the deputy attorneys general is not judgment. I look forward to that. "

The Prosecutor General: "Turpe do ut des" "Evidence findings undeniably

confirm Mr Mannino's fear of being killed, as claimed by the prosecution, and his actions to activate a 'shame do ut des' to stop the strategy massacre initiated by Cosa Nostra ", said the pg Sergio Barbiera, who supports the accusation together with his colleague Giuseppe Fici.

The trial in Mannino began in 2012, on November 4, 2015 there was an acquittal and a year later the sentence was filed.

Last week, in front of the Palermo Assize Court of Appeal, the second degree trial of the other defendants in the so-called negotiation began: former Ros officers such as Mario Mori, Antonio Subranni and Giuseppe De Donno, the bosses Leoluca Bagarella and Antonio Cinà, Massimo Ciancimino and Marcello Dell'Utri, all condemned, unlike Mannino, to very heavy penalties.

The repentant Giovanni Brusca was also at the stand, acquitted by prescription of the crime.
