Berlin (dpa / bb) - The Berliners and Brandenburgers are getting a new car less often than last year.

From January to September 45 087 cars were newly registered in Berlin, 31 percent fewer than in the same period last year.

According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, the number in Brandenburg fell by 19 percent to 39,926.

This is noticeable in the car dealerships: Despite strong growth in the autumn, retail sales in Brandenburg and Berlin are 2.9 and 4.6 percent below the previous year's values, as the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office announced on Thursday.

The number of employees has decreased slightly.

The fact that sales did not plummet could be related to the fact that customers more often opted for the often more expensive electric drives.

In the face of increased purchase premiums, electric cars and hybrid vehicles that combine combustion engines and electric motors are selling well.

By September, every fourth new vehicle registration in Berlin fell into one of the two categories, in Brandenburg it was almost every fifth.
