Lüneburg (dpa / lni) - "To a dear grandma" is written in childlike writing on a white envelope in the middle of a mountain of Christmas mail.

More than 620 letters, cards and small parcels from all over Germany were received in Lüneburg by Thursday to support the elderly.

The “Letters for Seniors” project launched at the beginning of November exceeded all expectations, and the initiators are expecting 1,000 letters by the deadline on Sunday.

"It's a lot of fun and has now become a role model for others," says Sabine Wölk of the Hanseatic city's neighborhood-oriented senior citizen work.

The spread in social media even aroused interest in Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

The project manager “Being there in old age” and her colleagues inspect all the entrances, including many drawings by school classes.

Quite a few do not write anonymously but with the sender so that the seniors can even reply.

“The whole thing has developed into a sustainable story that then continues,” says Wölk, who forwards the post to people who feel particularly lonely during this difficult Advent season due to the pandemic.

She also receives calls from interested parties who want to imitate the campaign or encourage them to continue in the new year.

Even then, Corona is not over and the situation in the senior facilities is similar.

"We canceled all social events and then thought about how we can reach people," says Wölk, explaining how the project came about.

The official end for the loving submissions is on the weekend.

"But we'll still be screening until the middle of the week, we won't ignore any letter."

And after that, her team will go into the Christmas season satisfied: "When we've got it, you have a good feeling".
