Aue (dpa / sn) - Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer sees the lockdown in Saxony beginning on Monday as the only way to ensure medical care in the state.

In view of the situation in the clinics, “very clear, authoritarian measures by the state are now needed,” said the CDU politician on Friday in Aue after a visit to the Helios Clinic.

There, for example, all intensive care beds are now occupied.

Social life in the Free State must come to rest, stressed Kretschmer.

This is the only way to reduce the number of people going to hospitals.

From Monday there will be a lockdown in the Free State - daycare centers and schools will then be closed, as well as many retail stores.

On Friday evening, the cabinet wants to adopt the exact rules with the new Corona Protection Ordinance.

"These measures must now take effect," emphasized Kretschmer.

The head of government criticized the sometimes casual approach among the population to the pandemic, although the situation is much more dramatic than in spring.

At the same time, he admitted that Saxony was "very late" with its measures.

The Bundeswehr is currently deployed with more than 700 soldiers who help in the medical field.

“As doctors, we support this tough lockdown,” said Christoph Josten from the Leipzig University Hospital.

If the number of infections in Saxony continued to develop like this, the hospitals in Saxony would have to hoist the "white flag" at Christmas.

He therefore urged the population to adhere to the Corona rules.

"We can't hold out much longer."

Patients would have to be relocated and entire wards closed.

Infectiologist Thomas Grünewald from the Chemnitz Clinic emphasized that Corona is not a flu.

"Anyone can become infected, anyone can get sick, anyone can die from this disease."

In the Chemnitz house alone, 1200 corona patients are currently being treated.

"We don't see the end of the climb."
