Berlin (dpa / bb) - Berlin continues to support students in the corona pandemic: The aid would be increased by five million euros, the Senate Chancellery announced on Friday.

Accordingly, three million euros will flow into a technology fund that supports students in the procurement of laptops, software and technical equipment for digital studies.

For the first time, lecturers could also apply for technology funds.

Two million euros come into the fund, which is intended to help students in need with a corona grant in the critical phase of starting or completing their studies.

According to the Senate Chancellery, applications for both funds can be submitted from January 4, 2021 via a new online platform of the Studierendenwerk Berlin.

The House of Representatives decided the funds for the aid package in the second supplementary budget.

The governing mayor and Senator for Science Michael Müller (SPD) said that the pandemic continues to pose major challenges for students.

It is right that Berlin should continue its aid programs.

"We don't want young people to give up their studies because they cannot afford a working laptop for online seminars or because their source of income for a living has broken down."

The Berlin programs supplemented federal aid.

The technology fund set up at the Studierendenwerk Berlin at the end of April with state funds and donations from companies has already supported around 700 students.

Students in need who are enrolled at a state or state-recognized university in the capital are supported with the Corona grant fund of the Studierendenwerk.
