Stuttgart (dpa) - Baden-Württemberg goes into lockdown after Christmas until at least January 10th due to the unchecked increase in corona infections.

Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) announced on Friday that, if necessary, a joint solution would be sought with the neighboring states of Baden-Württemberg, provided that no uniform national solution could be found.

How exactly the lockdown should look like remained open at first.

"Unfortunately, the situation is alarming," emphasized Kretschmann.

"We have signs of a renewed exponential increase in new infections, which is why it is imperative that we tighten the measures drastically."

The state government and municipal state associations would jointly come to the conclusion that a hard lockdown after Christmas until at least January 10, 2021 is essential.

Kretschmann said he would advocate such a step at the Prime Minister's Conference with the Chancellor, which is scheduled for Sunday.

If one does not agree on a uniform solution, the southwest wants to move forward with the neighboring countries.

Due to the sharp increase in new corona infections throughout Baden-Württemberg, the green-black cabinet will meet on Friday in Stuttgart for a special meeting.

A press conference with Kretschmann and Deputy Prime Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) is then planned.

The number of confirmed corona infections in the southwest had recently increased by 4208 cases within one day to a total of 179 154 infections since the beginning of the pandemic.

Nationwide, the value for new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days was 168.8 and thus again higher than on the previous days.
