A clear majority of Germans are in favor of a hard lockdown like in the spring if the corona infection numbers do not decline in the next few weeks.

73 percent expressed this opinion in the ZDF “Politbarometer” published on Thursday, while 24 percent spoke out against it.

All schools, daycare centers and shops with the exception of the grocery store should then be closed.

In the current situation, 49 percent of those questioned criticized that the protective measures in place did not go far enough.

This was 18 percentage points more than two weeks ago.

35 percent consider the current rules to be just right (minus four points) and 13 percent consider the restrictions to be excessive (minus 15 points).

Of the individual measures, 82 percent support the extension of the partial lockdown until January 10th.

Only 48 percent think that the easing of the contact restrictions over Christmas is right and 50 percent wrong.

Two weeks ago this was still supported by a clear majority of 58 percent.

In the current survey, 79 percent believe that easing over New Year's Eve is wrong and only 19 percent is right.

Nocturnal curfews in urban and rural districts with high numbers of infections are in favor of 74 percent.

Corona is the most important problem for the majority

A large majority of 84 percent consider the "Corona" issue to be the most important political problem in Germany at the moment.

This is the highest value so far in the “Politbarometer” on this question.

At 59 percent, the proportion of the population who sees their health at risk from the corona virus has also increased.

The Mannheim research group Elections surveyed 1246 randomly selected voters for the “Politbarometer” from Monday to Wednesday.

The error rate was given as two to three percentage points, depending on the percentage.
