Erfurt (dpa / th) - In the future, trucks should be able to refuel with hydrogen in the Erfurt freight center.

The Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Nature Conservation announced on Thursday that one of the first such gas stations in Germany will be built in the industrial park in the coming years.

The ministry plans to invest up to seven million euros in the pilot project.

«Here climate protection is combined with regional added value.

Hydrogen produced on site from solar and wind energy allows trucks operated with clean energy to roll from A to B, ”said Environment Minister Anja Siegesmund (Greens).

Wind and solar energy are to be used as the basis for local hydrogen production.

Accordingly, truck parking spaces covered with solar modules are to be created right next to the petrol station.

There, electric trucks will be able to fill up with the electricity generated on site.

Previously, 70 companies based in the freight center were asked about their need for hydrogen-powered vehicles.

For some time now, Thuringia has been increasingly focusing on expanding hydrogen technology as a substitute for fossil fuels.

From January 2022, a train powered by hydrogen fuel cells is expected to travel through the Schwarzatal in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district.

The federal government is pursuing a national hydrogen strategy.

By 2030, generation plants with a total output of up to five gigawatts are to be built in Germany, including the additional green electricity plants required for this, especially offshore wind turbines.

In May, Bavaria announced the construction of 100 hydrogen filling stations by 2023.
