December 10, 2020 "Another historic turning point today! Two of our great friends, Israel and the Kingdom of Morocco, have agreed to have full diplomatic relations. A great turning point for peace in the Middle East!".

The president of the United States, Donald Trump wrote on Twitter.

For weeks there was talk of a possible normalization of relations between Israel and Morocco, supported by Washington, which favored the "Abrahamic agreements" between Israel, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.

As his time in office runs out, Trump said Israel and Morocco will restore diplomatic and other relations, including the immediate reopening of liaison offices in Rabat and Tel Aviv and the eventual opening of embassies.

US officials said the deals will also include joint overflight rights for airlines.

Trump recognizes Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara

US President Donald Trump announced on Twitter today that he had "recognized Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara", stating that "Morocco's proposal for a serious, credible and realistic autonomy of Morocco is the the only basis for a just and lasting solution that leads to lasting peace and prosperity! ".

A former Spanish colony, the North African region is disputed between Morocco and the Polisario Front.

The United States is now the only Western country to recognize Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara, and President-elect Joe Biden will have to decide whether or not to review that decision.

As pointed out by the Axios website, it will not be easy for Biden to back down, thus compromising the agreement reached for full diplomatic relations between Rabat and Israel.

An agreement that came at the end of negotiations started two years ago and carried out by Trump's adviser, Jared Kushner, together with the special envoy Avi Berkowitz, directly with the Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
