Mülheim / Ruhr (dpa / lnw) - On Thursday, Deutsche Bahn started building a temporary bridge over Autobahn 40 in Mülheim.

The previous building had to be demolished after a tanker under the bridge caught fire.

In the afternoon, a heavy-duty crane lifted the first of a total of eight bridge sections.

"It's going according to plan," said a railway spokeswoman.

Each part is 26 meters long and weighs around 80 tons.

The work should continue in the evening and on Friday night.

The A40 has been closed in the area since December 4th.

First two more badly damaged bridges were demolished, now the construction of the auxiliary bridge is following.

The closure of the important commuter motorway between Kreuz Kaiserberg and Mülheim-Styrum should end at 5 a.m. on December 14th at the latest.

Until then, drivers have to drive around the area.

According to earlier information, the temporary bridge is to be replaced in six to seven years.

It should be ready for use on December 28th.

The railway line between Essen and Duisburg should then be used again in both directions.

According to the State Office for Road Construction NRW, the vehicle diversion traffic runs without problems.

"That is certainly also due to the fact that there is less traffic in the system due to the partial lockdown," said a spokeswoman.

The tanker truck with 35,000 liters of fuel on board went off the road on September 17 and caught fire under the railway bridge.

At the wheel was a 41-year-old from Essen who was injured.

The public prosecutor's office in Duisburg assumes that the driver was “very heavily drunk” as the cause of the accident.
