Bonn / Munich (dpa / lby) - The German Research Foundation (DFG) also honored three Bavarian scientists when awarding the Leibniz Prizes in 2021.

The honors are Elisabeth André, artificial intelligence researcher at the University of Augsburg, the immunologist Jürgen Ruland at the Munich Klinikum rechts der Isar and the astrophysicist Volker Springel from the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Garching.

The DFG awards a total of ten scientists.

Each award winner receives 2.5 million euros, which are earmarked for research.

Because of the corona pandemic, the most important German research award will be awarded in a virtual setting on March 15, 2021.

The researchers can use the prize money for their work for up to seven years.

"I am very proud that three out of a total of ten of these high-value awards go to scientists who work at a Bavarian research institution," said Science Minister Bernd Sibler (CSU).

The Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize has been awarded annually by the DFG since 1986.

Including the award for 2021, 388 Leibniz Prizes have been awarded since then.

Nine winners later received the Nobel Prize, including this year's Nobel Prize winners Emmanuelle Charpentier (chemistry) and Reinhard Genzel (physics).
