Berlin (dpa) - After circle runner Patrick Wiencek, backcourt player Fabian Wiede also voluntarily renounces participation in the handball world championship in Egypt.
The 26-year-old professional from Füchse Berlin does not feel ready for the tournament from January 13th to 31st, 2021 after shoulder surgery, as the German Handball Federation (DHB) announced on Thursday.
After Wiencek's cancellation for personal reasons as well as the injuries of Franz Semper and Tim Suton (both cruciate ligament ruptures), Wiede is the fourth national player that national coach Alfred Gislason has to do without at the World Cup.
"I'm very sorry that I have to cancel Alfred, but my shoulder does not allow the constant strain again," said Wiede, who has been back in the Bundesliga for the Berliners for a long time.
An overall package for 2021 consisting of the World Cup, Olympic qualification in March and the Olympic Games in summer is not yet acceptable to him after detailed medical advice.
Gislason wants to nominate his squad for the World Cup preparation probably on December 21st.
