Bremen (dpa / lni) - According to Interior Senator Ulrich Mäurer (SPD), the Bremen fire brigade will pay more attention to the constitutionality of its applicants in the future.

"We have to ensure that no people join the fire brigade who have a problem with our legal system," said Mäurer on Thursday.

Improved prevention is a consequence of the scandal surrounding right-wing extremism and bullying in the professional fire department in the Hanseatic city.

At the end of November, allegations became known that members of a security department had shared right-wing extremist and racist content in chats for years.

It is also about bullying against a fire brigade colleague with foreign roots.

Karen Buse, a special investigator appointed by Mäurer, gave an example at the meeting of a parliamentary interior committee: The men had put on their colleague's uniform with the name tag of a rescue doll and then hung the doll by the neck.

Four disciplinary proceedings have been ongoing because of the allegations.

At the same time, the public prosecutor's office is investigating a 52-year-old professional firefighter on suspicion of sedition and the use of anti-constitutional symbols.

When a house was searched, data carriers were secured, said Mäurer.

These should be evaluated by the state security police by the end of January.

The Bremen fire brigade has a total of 1,600 members, including around 610 full-time firefighters.

According to Buses, about ten men were involved in the right-hand chat groups.
