For millions of music fans, the big festivals are part of the summer.

But where else bands are celebrated, this year there was silence.

Nothing worked with Alex Schwers in 2020 either.

Schwers organizes the Ruhrpott Rodeo in Hünxe, the largest punk open air festival in the republic.

9000 visitors normally come to the grounds of the Schwarze Heide airfield.

The planning for the Ruhrpott Rodeo 2021 is almost complete: "Almost all the bands are booked, and if everything goes well, we can offer our strongest program to date," says Schwers.

A hygiene concept for the festival is also ready: "For example, there will be parcels on the camping site, we have enlarged the area of the festival and it will be mandatory to wear masks in the stage area."

The Hünxe public order office is satisfied with the plans, says Schwers.

But all of this would drive up the production costs of the Ruhrpott rodeo significantly.

In addition, no one can say whether the fans will also participate if festivals can actually take place next summer.

Will they be pushing festivals more than ever after the 2020 failures?

Or will they react cautiously for a long time?

“It's going to be an exciting year,” says Schwers.

This assessment is also shared by Marcus Gloria, organizer of the Bochum Total Festival, which for many years has been the largest free music event in Germany with up to 800,000 visitors over four days: “I hope that many will be vaccinated by summer and that we will have one by then have a sensible Corona app, ”says Gloria.

“If only vaccinated people could go to a club, a lot would be gained.

It would also be important if an app could tell when someone was infected in a bar or club.

Then all the other visitors know that they have to be tested. ”For Gloria, it depends on these two measures whether the coming summer can offer more normality again.

Gloria, 57 years old, founded Bochum Total in 1986.

Dozens of bands play there on four stages.

Big names in the scene like Tocotronic, Wir sind Helden or the Donuts performed here, mostly before their big careers started.

The festival is mainly financed through advertising.

This year it only took place online.

For the coming year, Gloria has decided to pretend there is no Corona: “We have started talks with our partners, the planning is ongoing.

At the moment we're assuming that the festival will take place in the summer. ”Gloria doesn't know whether people will then feel like jostling in front of the stages.

At the beginning of November, the state set up a working group to deal with the possible reopening of cultural institutions.

Open-air events, the Ministry of Culture announced on request, are "currently not the subject of the working group's deliberations"
