Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The owner of the textile manufacturer van Laack, Christian von Daniels, has rejected criticism of an order from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for 10 million protective gowns.

In the spring, "everything went perfectly clean with the order from the purchasing authority," said the entrepreneur on Wednesday evening in an online discussion group in front of students from the University of Witten / Herdecke.

In the spring there was no other company in Germany that could have served the order with the required quality and speed - that's why the contract was awarded, he said.

On the mediation of his freelancer, the fashion blogger Johannes «Joe» Laschet, von Daniels had phoned his father and NRW Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) in the spring.

The SPD parliamentary group in the state parliament had questioned whether the award of the 38.5 million euro contract was right and referred to other companies that would also have liked to deliver smocks but would not have received an answer.

Von Daniels, on the other hand, emphasized that the other companies would have been much too small to handle the large order - 10 million certified protective gowns should have been delivered within two months, with the first deliveries already starting after two weeks.

At the end of November, in an interview with the Rheinische Post, the manager reported that the fashion blogger “Joe” Laschet passed his cell phone number on to the Prime Minister and that the politician had called him later.

Laschet Senior, on the other hand, only passed on his contact details to the responsible Ministry of Health after the phone call, emphasized von Daniels.

The behavior of the SPD parliamentary group in the debate about the mediation of the order sees von Daniels with a shake of the head.

The award of the contract had been known since April.

It is incomprehensible "that the SPD now comes up with the idea of twisting it so that it is nepotism".

He called the SPD parliamentary group leader Thomas Kutschaty earlier this week and told him, "I don't understand why you haven't researched us - we're ready for complete transparency."

He emphasized that van Laack was not determined by party politics - “The main thing is that people buy our shirts”.

Van Laack is a textile manufacturer based in Mönchengladbach.

In the 2019/20 financial year that ended at the end of April, van Laack GmbH had sales of 56.1 million euros and a profit of 7.4 million euros, according to the Federal Gazette.

According to the company boss, the company has a production facility in Vietnam with 500 employees and one in Tunisia with 800 employees.

In Vietnam, the company has also been manufacturing mouth and nose masks since February, the use of which is intended to contain the corona pandemic.

The protective gowns are made in Tunisia.
