Potsdam (dpa / bb) - Brandenburg's state capital Potsdam is taking further measures to curb the spread of the corona virus.

Due to the persistently high number of infections, the mask requirement will be extended to other parts of the city center, Babelsberg and Potsdam-West from Thursday.

Mayor Mike Schubert announced this on Wednesday evening.

In addition, the municipality is preparing a ban on alcohol consumption in parts of the city center and a ban on the consumption of food at weekly markets.

In order to interrupt the chains of infection in schools, the health department will, in a first step, suspend classroom teaching for students in upper school and upper school centers and order hybrid teaching.

Furthermore, school sports in halls and swimming lessons are to be prohibited for all grades with immediate effect.

All of this should be implemented by the end of the week.

"The hoped-for effect of the containment measures taken since November has not yet materialized," said Schubert.

“We have a diffuse infection process in Potsdam that is spread across the city.

We have to act so that the values do not rise any further. "
