Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - The black-green state government is calling for more support from Berlin for the electrification of railway lines in Hesse.

The federal government has set itself the goal of increasing the electrification of the rail network from the current 60 percent to 70 percent by 2025, said Transport Minister Tarek Al-Wazir (Greens) in response to a small request from the SPD parliamentary group in Wiesbaden.

Despite a request from the federal states, neither a network map of the existing electrified routes nor a list of the planned projects has so far been drawn up.

Since Hesse is a mobility country, the expansion of the infrastructure is of great economic importance, the minister emphasized.

The electrification of the rail lines plays a major role in this.

Most of the railway infrastructure in Hessen is owned by the federal government and is operated by the federally owned DB Netz AG.

According to the Ministry of Transport, there are 2573 kilometers of railway lines in Hesse.

Of these, 836 kilometers or almost 33 percent are not electrified.

These data are collected every five years and come from 2015. Information from 2020 is not yet available.
