Berlin (dpa / bb) - The top SPD candidate for the House of Representatives, Franziska Giffey, rejects an extension of the rent cap.

"The rent cover is limited to five years and it is important that we say very clearly that this is not automatic, this is a breathing space that is now available," said Giffey on the RBB television program "Talk from Berlin".

The time must be used for more new construction, also with partners from the private sector.

The topic must be a matter for the boss.

After the five years of the rent cap, "you have to find other ways so that investors don't say I'm going somewhere else," said Giffey.

The current Federal Minister for Family Affairs has recently been co-chair of the SPD state association and wants to become the governing mayor next year.

According to the nationwide unique law on the rent cap, rents for around 1.5 million apartments are frozen at the June 2019 level.

Excessive existing rents have had to be reduced since November.
