In Moscow, at the age of 79, the Soviet and Russian military leader Yevgeny Shaposhnikov died. He was the last Minister of Defense of the USSR. From 1991 to 1993, Shaposhnikov was in charge of the Armed Forces of the Soviet Union and the CIS. He was entrusted with the responsibility for the withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of the former Soviet republics and the countries of the Warsaw Pact, the export of nuclear weapons and the depoliticization of the army.
