Madrid (AP) - The referee appointment for the decisive Champions League preliminary round game of Borussia Mönchengladbach at Real Madrid has awakened unpleasant memories in the annex of Borussia.

The European football association UEFA nominated the Dutch referee Björn Kuipers for the game on Wednesday (9 p.m. / DAZN).

The Gladbach-based team has struggled with referees from the neighboring country several times in their European Cup history.

Only last week, the Dutchman Danny Makkelie had denied the alleged equalization of Alassane Plea to 3: 3 against Inter Milan because of a passive offside position from Breel Embolo.

This had particularly pissed off Gladbach coach Marco Rose.

In 1971 a Dutch referee was also at the infamous rifle throwing game against Inter Milan: Jef Dorpmans.

The game was canceled because Milan's Roberto Boninsegna is said to have injured himself after being hit by an empty Coke can.

From Gladbach's point of view, the memory of March 1976 is particularly painful. After a 2-2 in the first leg at Bökelberg against Real Madrid in the European Cup of the national champions, the Dutchman Leonardus van der Kroft had denied Borussia two goals in the 1-1 draw in Madrid.

Gladbach was eliminated at the time, van der Kroft then stopped playing internationally.

Borussia have not had any bad experiences with Kuipers so far.

He has already led several Gladbacher European Cup games, including the 2-2 in October in Milan.

In order to reach the last sixteen of the Champions League on their own, the Rose team must not lose in Madrid.
