He noted that the attitude of the majority of German citizens towards Russia is positive, but this does not apply to the political, economic and military elites.

In his opinion, this is bad.

He does not believe that changes in relations between Germany and Russia can be expected in the foreseeable future.

“Including, I do not see possible changes with the change of the president in the United States - at best, the expectation that it will be possible to cooperate more with them at a more multilateral level,” Hampel said.

The politician added that the problem for relations between Russia and Germany is that the United States does not want the implementation of the joint project Nord Stream 2 into reality.

“And if anyone believes that their skepticism will suddenly disappear with the arrival of Joe Biden as president of the United States, then he is very, very mistaken,” said Hampel.

He recalled that former US President Barack Obama opposed Nord Stream 2.

The current American leader Donald Trump also opposes the project.

Hampel believes that the Biden government will behave in a similar way.

"We need to develop and define our position in relation to the United States in accordance with our German goals," he said.

Earlier, the Kremlin said that the US sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project are nothing more than a manifestation of unfair competition.
