Berlin / Münster (dpa) - The German Police University is to investigate what the everyday work of police officers looks like and how often officers are victims of violence on the job.
An independent study on racism, which is only concerned with the police and which is called for by migrant associations and politicians from several parties, is not to be given.
As the Federal Ministry of the Interior announced on Tuesday, the researchers at the special university in Münster should also find out in their three-year study what motivates young people to choose a career in the police.
The data should be collected by means of questionnaires, interviews and “participatory observation”.
The German Police University is run by the interior ministries and interior senators of the federal states and the federal states.
"I would like to know how and where we can support our police officers even better in everyday life," said Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU).
He opposed a study that only looked at racism in the police force.
Last week, the Federal Cabinet adopted a catalog of measures to combat right-wing extremism and racism, which was also developed by its ministry.
These include strengthening political education and prevention programs, public service campaigns to recruit people with a migration background, and an overview of the situation on right-wing extremism in the security authorities.
