Berlin / Washington (dpa) - Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD) has confirmed the rejection of the recently renamed Facebook digital currency.

"A wolf in sheep's clothing remains a wolf," said Scholz after an online meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors of the G7 countries.

“It is therefore clear to me that Germany and Europe cannot and will not accept a market entry as long as the risks are not adequately addressed by regulatory means,” he emphasized.

After the meeting, the US Treasury Department also confirmed that the G7 agreed that digital currencies should be strictly regulated.

The digital currency developed by Facebook was recently renamed “Diem” (“day” in Latin) by Libra.

This should symbolize a “new day for the project”, announced the association for the administration of the crypto currency.

The world's largest online network had developed digital money, but then left control to the organization based in Switzerland.

The project, presented in June 2019, had met massive resistance from governments and regulators and it is still unclear when it will be launched.

Facebook and the association always emphasized that the digital currency would only start with the approval of the regulatory authorities.
