Barleben / Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - The Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg is getting a new research center for environmentally friendly drive systems.

The “Center for Method Development” (CMD) in Barleben near Magdeburg with several test stands and laboratories for electric, hydrogen and hybrid drives is to be built by the end of 2023, announced the Ministry of Economics and Science in Magdeburg on Monday.

The operating and aging behavior of batteries should be examined there.

In addition, the fuel cell system in the car, including the air supply and water management, should be optimized.

The ministry is providing the university with 31 million euros for the project, 11 million euros from the state budget and 20 million euros from the European Regional Development Fund.

Economics Minister Armin Willingmann (SPD) stated: “In the future, national and international companies from the automotive and supplier industries will be able to cooperate with the CMD research center - this will further increase the attractiveness of the entire automotive location in northern Saxony-Anhalt and further companies could set up shop entail. Barleben is an important automotive location in Saxony-Anhalt.

The Institute for Competence in AutoMobility (IKAM) and the Magdeburg Innovation and Start-up Center (IGZ) as well as the Japanese Horiba Group are also located there.

The battery and fuel cell specialist is said to be expanding its location for 30 million euros and creating 250 new jobs.

According to Horiba's plans, a “global competence center for fuel cells and batteries” is to be built in Barleben.
