Bremerhaven (dpa) - For Bremerhaven's ice hockey professional Maxime Fortunus, gestures and movements against racism and violence are the most effective way to get better.

“The best way to fight racism is to talk about it,” said the 37-year-old Canadian in an interview with the “Nordsee-Zeitung” (Monday).

Fortunus is one of the few black players in professional ice hockey.

A lot has happened this year, especially through the civil rights movement “Black Lives Matter”, said the family man.

Therefore, before the start of the DEL preparation tournament in mid-November, he initiated that his team colleagues symbolically kneel down on the ice.

"How good it is to stand up for something and to be able to make people aware that racism is a problem and happens all over the world," he described the action.

However, Fortunus drew attention to the fact that a “long fight” is still ahead.

"People have to stick together so we can solve the problem," said the defender of Fish Town Pinguins.
