Zurich (dpa) - A welcome change for Joachim Löw, who has recently been on the defensive.

Today, Monday (6 p.m. / Sky Sport News HD), almost three weeks after the disastrous 6-0 win against Spain, the national coach found out who the national team will face in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Answers to the most important questions before the draw in Zurich.

Does Löw have to be there for the drawing?

No.

Due to the corona pandemic, this time the ceremony will be held in digital form.

Former top professionals Rafael van der Vaart (Netherlands) and Daniele de Rossi (Italy) draw the lots.

Which opponents are possible - and which are not?

Because Germany is in the first lottery pot, duels with world-class opponents such as France, England or Belgium are excluded.

From the second pot, the Löw-Elf could deal with Austria for David Alaba, Poland for Robert Lewandowski or the uncomfortable Swiss.

In pot three, Hungary, Russia, the Czech Republic, Scotland and Finland are further EM participants.

The heaviest group on paper would be Switzerland and Russia.

If it goes well, this season is also possible: Romania, Northern Ireland, Luxembourg, Andorra and San Marino.

How and when will the qualification be played out?

The ten group game days will be played in full in 2021.

It starts on March 24th, the last group matches will be played on November 16th.

The ten group winners have their tickets for the final tournament in Qatar safe.

Because of the Corona crisis, there are three game days in March and September.

Two more game dates are scheduled for October and November.

What happens if the German team doesn't win the group?

That depends on the place.

The national team would qualify in second place for the playoffs, which will be played in spring 2022.

There twelve teams play the three remaining places: the ten runners-up and the two best group winners of the Nations League who did not qualify for the finals or at least the playoffs via the qualification route.

Overall, Europe is entitled to 13 of the 32 World Cup places.

The third group place in the qualification means the end in the qualification.

What can the Löw team expect in 2021?

Lots of competitive games.

The first international match window in March is both a World Cup qualifying start and warm-up for the pan-European EM, which will take place in twelve cities in June and July.

There Germany already meets world champions France and European champions Portugal in the preliminary round.

Once the EM is over, the final phase of the World Cup qualification continues in autumn.

The final tournament in Qatar will take place from November 21 to December 18, 2022.
