He had been wanted for more than eight years to serve 25 years in prison for killing an employee of a company in Tarragona with a shot in the head during a robbery in 2002. But 10 years later he escaped and until a few days ago he did not he was arrested again.
He was so hidden, posing as someone else, that even his wife and daughter did not know who he was and were shocked to learn his identity and violent background.
For his arrest, the Mossos d'Esquadra and the National Police carried out an important operation to locate him.
He was not listed as the owner of any property or vehicle and had no known job.
He used people in his environment to get basic support with the sole purpose of going unnoticed and not leaving any trace that would allow him to be located.
The agents discovered that several family members had farms in the province of Barcelona and after carrying out checks they detected the habitual residence of the convicted person's partner in a farmhouse with difficult access in Castellví de la Marca (Barcelona).
There the offender took refuge, going out only a few hours a day.
The agents entered the house but he escaped through a back door and hid in a nearby forest with his sentimental partner, who did not know his true identity.
Finally, he was located and detained in the nearby town of Múnia, while he was waiting to be picked up by relatives who had to take him to an unknown place.
The escapee was sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing an employee of a Tarragona company.
He had been on the run since 2012 and remained hidden thanks to a network of personal and family ties that supported him financially.
He is considered one of the most wanted fugitives in Spain due to the time that the agents were after him since he has four judicial claims such as a conviction for murder and two for robbery with violence.
In 2017, the Mossos received the request for collaboration to catch him, mainly for the murder conviction.
According to the agents, in 2002 the detainee, along with two other people, stole a vehicle and committed a robbery in a Tarragona company, with his face covered with ski masks and armed with a sawed-off shotgun and a revolver.
During the assault, they demanded the workers to throw themselves to the ground while stealing cash.
When they fled with the loot, and before getting into the vehicle, a man jumped on one of the robbers, both fell to the ground and, during the struggle, managed to remove his ski mask.
In response to this surprise assault, the arrested man fired the sawed-off shotgun at the man's head, who died that same day.
However, the investigation did not shed light until 2011 when, thanks to advances in forensic investigation techniques, the lofoscopic fingerprints collected in the eye inspection were reintroduced into the system and a suspect was identified.
The balaclava that the victim took from one of the robbers was also analyzed and, given the improvement in techniques for obtaining genetic markers, the DNA of another of the robberies was obtained.
All these advances and the new investigations made it possible to show that this criminal organization had committed more than 79 robberies with firearms and killed three other people.
With this evidence, the perpetrators were arrested and placed in preventive detention.
The one now arrested was released until the trial and took advantage of this circumstance to flee and avoid serving the 25-year prison sentence imposed on him for theft of a vehicle, robbery with intimidation, homicide and illegal possession of weapons, with aggravating of disguise and recidivism.
