Berlin (dpa / bb) - In the capital, more than every fifth employee works on at least one Sunday or public holiday per month.

Of the almost 1.6 million dependent employees in Berlin, this affects around 337,000 employees, as can be seen from a response from the Federal Statistical Office to a request from the Left in the Bundestag, which is available to the German Press Agency.

That is a share of 21.1 percent.

It is only higher in Saarland (21.3 percent) and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (24.1 percent).

57,000 people even work in Berlin every Sunday and public holiday.

That is 3.6 percent of all employees.

Against the background of these numbers, the left demanded that more attention should be paid to people's recovery.

"It is understandable that you have to work on Sundays in the hospital or on the train - but you don't have to go shopping on Sundays," said the deputy parliamentary group leader Susanne Ferschl of the dpa.

On this St. Nicholas Sunday, too, a large number of employees had to work in Berlin, especially in retail: In the capital, many shops were open on the first of two open Sundays during Advent.
