Ahead of the budget consultations in Parliament

German Chancellor: Government support will not last forever

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in her weekly video message, yesterday, that government support and massive public aid for the Corona pandemic crisis will be less in the future and will not last forever, and her speech came ahead of the budget consultations in the German parliament (Bundestag).

She added that the current level of support cannot continue indefinitely, adding that everyone bears a great responsibility.

And she added, "The German federal government, states and localities must work well together and constructively in order to control the pandemic and its consequences as much as possible."

Germany's ruling coalition plans to take on nearly 180 billion euros of new debt next year, and to suspend the principle of debt reduction stipulated in the constitution again.

Merkel defended the new borrowing, and explained that since the start of the pandemic, the goal is to mobilize financial resources to confront it. She said: "The costs will be higher financially and socially if many companies collapse and millions of jobs are lost."

Merkel said the German government could also use large sums in 2021, because budgets have been good in recent years.

The German parliament intends to discuss the new budget as of tomorrow, and more than a third of what is expected to be the last budget of the current ruling coalition will be financed from debt. German citizens also have tax deductions.

The "Left" party talks about "the most expensive electoral campaign budget in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany."

It should be noted that legislative elections are scheduled to take place in Germany in the fall of next year.
