Wilhelmshaven (dpa / lni) - A car accident in Wilhelmshaven triggered a major rescue operation by the fire brigade and police.

A police spokesman said on Sunday that a car went off to the left of the lane on Saturday evening, hit a tree and then landed in a ditch filled with water.

The passenger was seriously injured.

A crane was needed to recover the car.

However, there was no trace of the driver.

Therefore divers searched the trench and even used a drone with a thermal imaging camera.

The police finally found the man where he lived.

It was said that he was drunk.

Overall, the rescue operation lasted until early Sunday morning.
