Berlin (dpa) - Pop singer Helene Fischer has collected together with other celebrities in the television program "A Heart for Children" a million sum for a good cause.

Almost 26 million euros came together.

On the ZDF show, the singer met a girl again on Saturday evening, whom she herself had visited in the hospital several years ago.

At that time the seven-year-old was suffering from leukemia.

Fischer sent her a greeting into the camera - but then the girl suddenly stood in front of her.

"Oh, how nice!" Said Fischer and was pleased.

A plexiglass was built between the two.

"How terrible," said Fischer, "I would love to hug you."

The corona virus has changed German television.

This time there was no audience in the Berlin studio, and the celebrities should also keep their distance from one another.

They sat on individual sofas in the room and answered calls for donations from viewers.

Pop star Fischer sang a duet with the Italian Andrea Bocelli, and later the 36-year-old performed the song “Never Enough”.

Her colleague and ex-partner Florian Silbereisen also performed - but the two did not sing together.

Silbereisen - meanwhile also "Traumschiff" captain - sang with musician Thomas Anders.

The “A Heart for Children” campaign launched by the “Bild” newspaper has existed since 1978. Last year, more than 18 million euros were collected.

This time the people donated more than ever before, wrote the organizers.

Several aid projects for children in need were also presented in the program.

Violinist David Garrett visited an auxiliary facility in Namibia.

The parents of many children had lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic, the organizer said.

"I find it unbearable to see children starving," Garrett said in the video.

On the live broadcast, he added: Of course it was a shitty year for a lot.

"However, one must not lose sight of the fact that there are countries and people that are far, much worse off."

Doctors, parents and children told their story that evening.

It was about more space for a clinic, a children's center in the slums of Manila or support for children who experience violence at home, for example.

In Germany, 40,000 children are taken into care every year, said Federal Family Minister Franziska Giffey (SPD).

For example, cabaret artist Dieter Hallervorden, actress Uschi Glas, chef Alfons Schuhbeck, entertainer Jürgen von der Lippe and presenter Sophia Thomalla were there on the evening.

Johannes B. Kerner led through the evening between Christmas trees.

Barbara Schöneberger said that they take the AHA rule very seriously.

AHA - that currently stands for keeping your distance, hygiene measures and everyday masks.

But Schöneberger had her own interpretation: "Sneaking up, hypnotizing and cashing in".

With the motto she collected donations from the celebrities herself.

With a blue glove she handed out microphones and in return for his donation gave Geiger Garrett a "one-man sauna" - a silver thing she slipped into herself.

The TV show showed magic tricks, singing and a joke ("What is healthy and constantly offended? A pouty bread.")

Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) was also in the studio.

He had just seen for himself on the donation phone how many people are ready to donate in these difficult times.

"This solidarity is encouraging," said Spahn.

The mayor of Trier, Wolfram Leibe (SPD), also called for solidarity.

Last week, five people were killed in a rampage in his city.
