If you compare Skåne's mortality in 2020 with the average for the past five years, no major change can be seen.

Skåne together with Blekinge and Västerbotten are clear examples of counties that deviate from the national curve.

- The reason is mainly that the spread of infection was not as great in Skåne during the spring compared to many other places, says Linus Garp.

"Serious consequences anyway"

Even if the mortality rate in Skåne has not been higher in 2020 compared with previous years, this does not mean that we can be calm, says Region Skåne's infection control doctor Eva Melander.

- This disease is spread as a common respiratory infection via direct contact and drip infection.

Had we not taken the measures we have, it would probably have looked different.

We have seen people who have consequences after the disease for several months so I do not think we are exaggerating.

The curve may change in the future

Since the beginning of October, the spread of infection has gained momentum in Scania and the number of patients with covid-19 in hospitals has never been higher before.

This may affect mortality in the future.

- In recent weeks, mortality in Skåne has increased.

We do not see the future, it may be that we instead see a clear excess mortality in Skåne, says Linus Garp, statistician at Statistics Sweden.
