  • Several unions and associations are calling for demonstrations against the “global security” law on Saturday afternoon in Nantes.

  • Businesses in the city center, severely affected by the confinement, are worried.

Despite the concern expressed by traders, the demonstration against the “global security” law will start from downtown Nantes this Saturday afternoon.

Appointment is given at 3 p.m. in front of the prefecture by the organizers (inter-union CGT, FO, FSU, Solidaires avec la LDH).

The procession must then take the cours des 50-Otages, the place de la Petite-Hollande, the quai de la Fosse, then stop in front of the Machines de l'île.

Objective: to obtain "the abandonment of the entire text of the law", in particular of its much criticized article 24 "which calls into question the freedom of the press and the freedom to observe".

“The law amplifies as ever a security logic in which generalized surveillance of the population becomes the norm.

This logic opens the door to serious tensions without the safety of all being better assured, ”denounce the organizers.

"There is also a duty not to break"

In a letter sent at the beginning of the week to the prefect of Loire-Atlantique, the Plein center association, which brings together merchants from the city center, asked the authorities "to stop immediately and until the end of January 2021 any demonstration in trade zones ”due to the economic crisis and the risk of overflow.

“The traders and artisans of our cities are all playing for survival.

We are for the right to demonstrate but above all for the right to welcome our customers so that they can do their Christmas shopping in peace, ”the text indicates.

The request is supported by elected officials, including those of La République en Marche.

“We see that the demonstrations always end with breakage.

There is of course a right to demonstrate but there is also a duty not to break, ”says MP Valérie Oppelt.

The mayor of Nantes, Johanna Rolland (PS), has preferred to distance himself.

“Violence will never have its place.

But the right to demonstrate is inalienable, it is absolutely essential, ”she says, adding that she is“ totally opposed ”to article 24 of the law.

She also considers that the course of this Saturday was "thought by the organizers to meet the demands of the traders".

Last week, the demonstration organized on a Friday evening brought together more than 5,000 people in the streets of downtown Nantes.

An important mobilization which took place in a calm atmosphere despite some clashes on the sidelines of the parade.
