Leipzig (dpa) - The Leverkusen epee fencer Marco Brinkmann has won the first edition of the German Masters.

The 23-year-old prevailed on Saturday in Leipzig in the final battle against Richard Schmidt (Tauberbischofsheim) with 15:14.

The German Fencing Association had created the tournament series for the national team athletes as a replacement for the German championships that were canceled due to the corona pandemic.

On Sunday the sword ladies will fight in Leipzig.

"With this tournament we have shown that we can offer a strong competition even under enormous safety regulations," said sports director Sven Ressel.

On December 12th and 13th it is the turn of the foil fencers in Tauberbischofsheim, the next week in Bonn the men and women with the saber.
