Bielefeld (AP) - Arminia Bielefeld celebrated a very important victory in the fight against relegation from the Bundesliga against direct competitor FSV Mainz 05.

With the 2: 1 (2: 0) a negative series of seven games without a win came to an end for the newly promoted team.

Manuel Prietl (21st minute) and Ritsu Doan (31st) ensured the second win of the season for Ostwestfalen on matchday ten, which means they jumped to 16th place.

For the Rheinhessen there was a bitter damper after the last three games without defeat.

Mainz only managed to catch up with the substitute Kevin Stöger (82nd).

Coach Jan-Moritz Lichte's team fell back to a direct relegation point with just five points behind Bielefeld.

Next weekend, the FSV will again have the chance to make amends against a direct competitor in a duel against 1. FC Köln.

For Bielefeld, the game against Mainz was the start of a series of important games in Freiburg, against Augsburg and at Schalke.

"We are already aware that the next games until Christmas are extremely important," said Bielefeld sports director Samir Arabi, who identified these opponents as direct competitors in the fight against direct relegation.

So far, things have not gone well for Arminia against better teams, but they also had bad luck in the 2-1 draw in Leipzig.

On Saturday, however, a lot went in favor of Bielefeld from the start.

The FSV started more energetic after three games without defeat in a row, but missed the possible lead with two outstanding chances from striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Bielefeld's goalkeeper Stefan Ortega saved both times against the French (12/16).

As a result, the Ostwestfalen, which started the season historically poorly with only four points from nine games, became bolder and better.

Prietl scored the first goal for Bielefeld in the first half of this season after half an hour.

The Neuhaus team was also lucky.

The shot of the 29-year-old Austrian was deflected untenable by Alexander Hack from Mainz.

After that the Armines no longer needed luck.

Bielefeld became stronger, more confident and safer.

Before the break, Doan scored his second goal of the season to make it a deserved 2-0 lead.

So it was early on with the Mainz plan to play to zero for the first time this season.

With 26 goals conceded, the Rheinhessen have the second worst defense in the league.

Only taillight Schalke 04 is worse with 28 goals conceded so far.

In the second half, even on the offensive without the injured Levin Öztunali, there was initially little for the guests.

Lichte tried again with a triple change after an hour and more impulses for the attack.

The former Düsseldorf Stöger, who was substituted in, still made the connection, but nothing more was possible.
