Magdeburg (dpa) - Saxony-Anhalt's CDU boss Holger Stahlknecht has defended his parliamentary group's no to a higher broadcast fee with the image of East Germany on public broadcasting.

The 56-year-old told the “Magdeburger Volksstimme” (Friday) that the broadcasters did not show enough of the transformation process in the East that led to radical changes in the lives of many people.

"The public broadcasters occasionally do not report on an equal footing, but with the raised index finger of moralization."

The CDU is not about curtailing the freedom of the press, said Stahlknecht.

But it must be possible to put the structures of those who live on the money of the contributors to the test.

It is currently expected that Saxony-Anhalt will veto the nationwide increase in the broadcasting fee by 86 cents to 18.36 euros on January 1, 2021.

The CDU does not want to support the increase under any circumstances, as Stahlknecht affirmed.

This also applies to the AfD.

The SPD and the Greens are in favor of the project.

If the government partners fail to come to an agreement in the coming days, not only the increase in the license fee threatens to fail, but also the Kenya coalition, which has been in power since 2016.

Crisis talks are currently being held by the CDU, SPD and the Greens in order to still achieve a unified vote.

That is also the goal of Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU).

The adjustment of the broadcasting fee by 86 cents to 18.36 euros per month was calculated by an independent commission, or KEF for short.

The Prime Ministers signed the proposal.

For the increase to come into force, all state parliaments must agree.

Saxony-Anhalt is considered the only wobbly candidate.
