The Minister of Economy and Finance announced on Friday the postponement of meal vouchers for 2020 until September 1, 2021. A decision welcomed by the CEO of Edenred France, Julien Tanguy.

Invited by Emmanuel Duteil, he estimated on Europe 1 that this measure would help boost catering.

The Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, announced Friday on BFMTV that the validity of the 2020 restaurant tickets will be extended until September 1, 2021, when they should have expired at the end of February.

Objective: revive consumption, made difficult by the health crisis linked to the coronavirus.

Julien Tanguy, Managing Director of Edenred France, the parent company of meal vouchers and gift certificates, was Emmanuel Duteil's guest and reacted to this announcement.

A way of "reinjecting the money"

"This is excellent news for us but above all for our users, who will be able to extend the duration of use of the meal vouchers they have in their wallet", affirmed the manager of the group.

It is estimated that because of the Covid-19 pandemic, 700 million euros would have been wasted without this government measure: "The fact that during this period we were not able to consume these tickets as we do usually requires that we can put that money back next year and that's one way to get it back into the economy and restaurants. "A real impact on turnover"

Regarding the increase in the ceiling of these restaurant tickets from 19 euros to 38 euros during the health crisis, Bruno Le Maire confirmed on Friday that this measure would also be extended.

A decision that delighted Julien Tanguy: "It will boost catering in two ways. First, because we are tempted to spend more and therefore we inject money back into the restaurant more quickly. Then because the 'we have calculated, thanks to digitized meal vouchers, that the average transaction, which was around 14 euros before this decision, rose to 21 euros thanks to this raising of the ceiling, "he explains.

Before continuing: "And these 21 euros are very important for the restaurant owner because it has a real impact on turnover and especially on the margin."

A crucial and very significant decision, which was therefore able to be measured by the group.

If the restaurants have been forced to close again since the beginning of November, Julien Tanguy also ensures that during the period from June to the end of October, the economy has really been "boosted": "We have observed a real consumption and a real overconsumption of restaurant vouchers, which is ultimately quite natural.
