Lüneburg (dpa / lni) - The Christmas stalls in Lüneburg are not allowed to sell drinks for the time being.

"For security reasons, the Hanseatic City of Lüneburg has now banned all beverage stands that the city directed today (Friday) with the sale of drinks," said city spokeswoman Suzanne Moenck on Friday.

"This applies to both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks."

The reason is that restaurants in the city center are now also offering hot drinks such as mulled wine to take away.

The city fears that it will be too crowded.

"Security and protection against infection are absolutely paramount for us," said Mayor Ulrich Mädge (SPD).

"That's why we use our influence where we have it, namely with our urban offer."

The administration wants to come to an agreement with the other providers and check the conditions under which hot drinks can be sold in the city center.

Since a Christmas market is not possible due to the corona pandemic, Lüneburg has set up small Christmas islands with lingering areas.

There it should be allowed to consume while sitting without a mask.

Mulled wine, bratwurst and lard cake were to be sold at 22 stalls.

At first only food is allowed to be sold.
