  Zhan Danan is a native of Jinzhai County, Anhui Province. He joined the Chinese Workers and Peasants Red Army in 1931, joined the Chinese Communist Youth League in 1932, and joined the Communist Party of China in 1936.

During the Agrarian Revolutionary War, he served as a soldier, squad leader, correspondent, security officer, officer, special commissioner, etc., participated in the second to fifth anti-"encirclement and suppression" campaigns in the Hubei, Henan and Anhui Revolutionary Bases, participated in the Long March of the Red Army, and participated in the labor Battle in the mountains, Yulin Bridge, Zhiluo Town and other battles.

During the Anti-Japanese War, he served as secretary, political instructor of the battalion, deputy political commissar of the brigade, political commissar of the brigade, battalion commander, commander, section chief, regimental commander, deputy chief of staff, chief of staff, and commander of the military division. The regiment battle, the Zhangjiakou battle, and many anti-"mopping-up" battles.

During the War of Liberation, he served successively as brigade commander, division commander, acting commander of the Jirecha Military Region, deputy commander of the Chahar Military Region, and division commander. He participated in the defense of Zhangjiakou and the battles of Rexi, Liaoshen, and Pingjin.

After the founding of New China, he served successively as deputy commander, commander, deputy commander of the Lanzhou Military Region and commander of the Gansu Provincial Military Region. He participated in the War of Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea and contributed to the revolutionization, modernization, and regularization of the military.

  Zhan Danan is a member of the 12th Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China and a representative of the 7th National People's Congress.

He was awarded the rank of major general in 1955 and was awarded the second-level August 1st Medal, the second-level Independent Freedom Medal, the First-Class Liberation Medal and the First-Class Red Star Merit Medal of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.
